Mathematics

Our school motto, ‘Ad Vitam Paramus’We Are Preparing for Life, epitomises the high aspirations that we have for our pupils. Encouraging them to have a life-long love of learning and fostering a ‘can do’ attitude, throughout their time at Mount Nod, is integral to our core values.

Mathematics is a fundamental part of life and we believe that our teaching needs to equip children with the necessary tools to help them make sense of the world around them. Tools such as the ability to reason, problem solve and the ability to think in abstract ways. Children can use these skills to analyse and communicate ideas and to tackle a range of practical tasks and real life problems.

"It’s not that I’m so smart; it’s just that I stay with problems longer."     Albert Einstein

We endeavour to ensure that all children are not only equipped for these problems but can also imagine themselves as mathematicians and develop a healthy, enthusiastic and confident attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them and prepare them for life.

"Just because we can’t find a solution, it doesn’t mean there isn’t one." - Andrew Wiles

At Mount Nod we are part of the ‘Origins Maths Hub’ in England, who support the continuous improvement of mathematics education. Their expertise and training has helped us to enhance our ‘Maths Mastery’ approach to teaching. This is a well-researched approach, inspired by areas in countries at the top of the table for attainment in mathematics education, such as Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Many primary schools across England have begun to embrace this style of teaching maths and we are proud to be at the forefront of this.

Power Maths Scheme

At Mount Nod, we follow the Power Maths scheme - a UK curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement and nurture confidence in maths. The national curriculum in England places emphasis on depth and breadth, not speed and acceleration, so that all children have a chance to reinforce learning and strengthen understanding. The Power Maths scheme supports this approach and allows pupils to gain a real depth of understanding. The scheme is built on a world‑class and unique mastery teaching model created by leading educational experts from the UK and China and provides an enriched approach that combines interactive teaching tools, quality textbooks and growth mindset (the concept that we can achieve anything with hard work and a postive atttitude). It is aligned to the White Rose Maths progression and schemes of learning and is recommended by the Department for Education.

Growth Mindset

Power Maths is built around a child‑centred lesson design that models and embeds a growth mindset approach to maths and focuses on helping all children to build a deep understanding of maths concepts.

Mastering Number in Reception and KS1

To give our pupils the very best chance of mastering a good sense of number, we follow a program, alongside the Power Maths scheme called Mastering Number.

This programme aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention is given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.

“Go down deep enough into anything and you will find mathematics.”       Dean Schlicter
