Spelling
“Let grammar, punctuation, and spelling into your life! Even the most energetic and wonderful mess has to be turned into sentences.” -Terry Pratchett
As part of our English Curriculum, children in each year group are required to learn a set of spellings. In order to aid the learning of these spellings we use the FFT Phonics scheme and Spelling Shed.
In KS1, the FFT Success For All Phonics Scheme is used. This is a complete systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) programme that has been validated by the Department for Education and supports children to learn all the skills needed to successfully read, write and spell.
In KS2, Spelling Shed is used to support lessons and the online games can be used at home. This approach to spelling involves the relationship between sounds and written symbols as well as using morphology to help spell through meaning. Each explicit and systematic Spelling Shed lesson incorporates phonics, morphology, and etymology elements and include a variety of instruction and activities that engage and challenge students while they learn. Spelling Shed's approach to spelling involves the relationship between sounds and written symbols as well as using morphology to help spell through meaning.
